Advanced channel optimization (beta) overview

This article references the enhanced Pops traffic channels beta feature, which includes custom optimization modes. Please refer to this article to learn about the non-beta version of Pops traffic channels, or contact us to request beta access.

How does Advanced channel optimization work?

Channels deliver Pops traffic to your campaigns from a variety of sources. By segmenting Pops traffic into channels, it's easier to optimize your campaign spend for maximum ROI.

Advanced channel optimization allows you to fine-tune your campaign's spend on each channel. Set bid multipliers on each channel to place bids relative to the bids you've set per target, pause and enable channels based on performance, and automatically opt into newly added channels with a bid multiplier of your choice.

NOTE: Advanced mode is best for advertisers who have the time and expertise to make informed, data-driven decisions when optimizing channel spend.

How do I manage my bids in Advanced campaigns?

The bids you set per target apply to traffic from Channel 50. Bids for all other channels can be adjusted using the bid multiplier. The bid multiplier you assign to a channel determines the bid for each target relative to the bids you've placed on each target. To calculate a target's bid on a channel, multiply the bid you've set for the target by the channel's bid multiplier.

For example, if you assign a 75% bid multiplier to Channel 305, you'd be bidding 75% of each bid you set. So if you've set a $.50 bid on the target "", it would have a $.375 bid on Channel 305 (75% of $.50).

NOTE: Channel 50 will always use the bids you've set per target, so its bid multiplier cannot be adjusted.
TIP: Bid multipliers can be set as high as 500%.

Monitoring bids per channel

The Default Bid column on your campaign's Channel Optimization tab calculates the default bid for each channel based on the default bid you've set in your Campaign Settings. If all targets in your campaign are set to the default bid, the value in the Default Bid column will reflect that channel's bids across all targets. And bids you've edited will have custom bids relative to the channel's bid multiplier.

How can I optimize channel performance?

There are countless ways to optimize channel performance! Here are a few tips:

  • Use the Channel Reports in your Pops Tools and Analysis tab to measure performance at the campaign, creative, and target levels. If, for example, you notice your campaign has certain targets that convert well on specific channels, you can create separate campaigns for different groups of targets and set higher bid multipliers on the channels that convert well for them. The same logic applies for optimizing channel performance for specific creatives.

  • Measure channel performance across all campaigns to determine how to optimize them in bulk, or analyze individual campaigns to fine-tune channels more granularly.

  • Find out if certain channels perform better on specific days by grouping your Channel Reports by day of the week. If you see a trend, you can duplicate your campaign, enable the channels with fluctuating performance, then customize your dayparting schedule so your campaign only runs on high-converting days of the week.

  • Channel performance can vary depending on your offer. When you find a channel that converts well for you, increase its bid multiplier to get more volume.

  • New channels are being added all the time! The Channel Optimization tab within your campaigns includes an option to automatically opt into newly added channels with the bid multiplier of your choice. By auto-enabling new channels, you can start testing them as soon as they're added.

TIP: When we add a new channel, you'll see a "New" badge on the Channel Optimization tab, where new channels will be labeled "New" for 30 days.
  • The volume indicators on your campaigns' Channel Optimization tabs represent the amount of worldwide volume the channel has available, so you can get a sense of how much volume to expect from each channel.

How do I enable and manage channels?

Default channel settings

When you create a new Pops campaign, all channels are enabled by default with bid multipliers set to 100%. You can pause, enable, and adjust bid multipliers for individual channels within each campaign, or in bulk across multiple campaigns.

New campaigns are also automatically opted into channels we add in the future. By default, newly added channels will have 100% bid multipliers, which you can customize within each campaign.

Managing channels for individual campaigns:

Follow the steps below to navigate to your campaign's Channel Optimization tab, where you can edit its channel settings:

  1. Log into your RTX Platform account, then click the Pops tab in the navigation bar.

  2. From the left sidebar, click the campaign with the channels you're managing, then click the Channel Optimization tab.

To update a channel's status or bid multiplier, follow the steps below:

  1. Click the paused or enabled icon in the Status column to switch a channel's status.

  2. To adjust a channel's bid multiplier, click the percent value in the Bid Multiplier column.

    1. Use the slider, or enter a new bid multiplier up to 500.

    2. Click the checkmark or press the enter key to apply your changes.

To adjust the bid multiplier for new channels we add in the future, follow the steps below:

  1. Click the "auto-enable new channels" percent value above the channels table.

  2. Enter a new bid multiplier. If you do not want to enable channels as they're added, enter "0".

  3. Click the checkmark or press the enter key to apply your changes.

Managing channels in bulk for multiple campaigns:

Follow the steps below to enable channels and edit bid multipliers in bulk for multiple campaigns:

  1. Log into your RTX Platform account, then click the Pops tab in the navigation bar.

  2. Click the Campaigns tab to navigate to your Campaigns dashboard.

  3. Check the box next to each campaign you want to update.

NOTE: When selecting multiple campaigns one at a time, they must be on the same page. Use the dropdown below the Campaigns table to display up to 500 rows per page.
    • To select all campaigns on the page, check the top-most checkbox in the table header.

    • To select all campaigns across all pages, check the top-most checkbox in the table, then click the link above the table to select all rows on all pages.

    • Adult campaigns must be updated separately from General campaigns because they use different channels. Apply a dashboard filter set to "Adult is True" to display only Adult campaigns, or "Adult is False" to display only General campaigns, then select the campaigns to bulk edit.

  4. From the Edit dropdown, select "Bulk Update Channel Settings".

  5. Select "Enabled" or "Paused" in the Status dropdown of each channel you want to update. If you don't want to update a channel's status, leave the selection set to "No Change".

  6. Enter a numeric value in the Bid Multiplier field associated with each channel you want to update.

  7. Click the "Bulk Update Channel Settings" button to apply your changes to the campaigns you selected.

NOTE: You may encounter a delay when bulk updating channels across a large number of campaigns, however, your new channel settings will still apply if you navigate away from the page or close the tab while your changes are processing. Learn more about channels.
